Access the Function
Flyer* activity and work on the problems below.
Tips for using the function
flyer for quadratic functions:
1) Input the quadratic in STANDARD FORM
as:
1*x^2 + 0*x + 0
this will give you the base function y =
x2 with all the required coefficients to practice the
"parabolic slide"
2) Change the STEP setting for the first
slider to 0.25 or 1/4 (as shown
at right). N.B. The first slider represents the leading
coefficient "a" for your quadratic function in standard form.
3) Answer the following questions:
a) What happens when you slide the
various sliders?
b) What happens when the leading
coefficient flips from positive to negative?
c) What happens when the leading
coefficient is zero?
d) What happens when you change the 2nd
coefficient? the third (or constant)?
e) What other observations can you
make?
4) Input the quadratic in VERTEX FORM
as:
1*(x-0)^2 + 0
As with STANDARD FORM, this will give
you the base function y = x2 with all the required coefficients
to practice the "parabolic slide"
PLAY with the coefficients
5) Answer the following questions:
a) How do the sliders perform similar to
standard form?
