Unit 2 Skills Review

You will be required to demonstrate a mastery of the following skills on the Unit 2 Test.

1)  Know how to graph real numbers on a number line; Integers, fractions, decimals, and percents.

 

2)  Evaluate expressions involving absolute value, real numbers and variables.

Evaluate:  |-5|               (answer: 5)
Evaluate:  3 - |9 - 18|    (answer: -6)
Evaluate:  26.43 - (32.17) - |-1.1|    (answer: -6.84)
Evaluate:  -3a
2 - 7 when a = -5    (answer: -82)

N.B. Uncle PEMDAS says: "Absolute value brackets are GROUPING SYMBOLS!"

3)  Understand and explain in your own words why -32 <> (-3)2.    

 

4)  Add and subtract matrices.

5)  Simplify expressions using the distributive property.  

Simplify: 3(x + 7)                  (Answer: 3x + 21)
Simplify: 3(x - 2) - 2(x - 1)    (Answer:  x - 4)

6)  Be able to calculate rates and ratios.  Recognize that a RATE compares two numbers with DIFFERENT units of measure, while a RATIO compares two numbers of the SAME unit of measure.    see small Purplemath hyperlink graphic lesson
